California’s Golden Years In NFL (American Football) 1977-1995
May 8th, 2011 by Michael Albridge

The NFL (American Football) Super Bowl is contested each year by the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The first three championships in 1967-1969 were known as the ‘AFL-NFL World Championship Game.’ The first ‘Super Bowl’ was not played until 1970, a useful fact to have in mind should the issue come up in a game of trivia. Every member of the team that wins the Super Bowl receives an elaborate and high coveted jewel-encrusted ring.

Between them, the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders brought eight sets of sparkly jewellery to California. San Francisco won the Super Bowl in the years 1982, 1985, 1989, 199 and 1995. The Raiders winning seasons were 1977, 1981 and 1984.

The Oakland Raiders formed on August 14, 1959. In 1977, they won their first Super Bowl game 32-24 against the Minnesota Vikings. Oakland’s second championship win came just four years later in 1981 when they beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 at the New Orleans Superdome.

Later in 1981, the team moved to Southern California to become the Los Angeles Raiders and their home stadium became the Coliseum. In 1984, they won Super Bowl XVIII against the Washington Redskins, beating them 38-9. Running Back, Marcus Allen, was voted MVP.

The San Francisco 49ers won their first of five Super Bowl games in 1982, the year quarterback, Joe Montana underwent spinal surgery. Their opponents were the Cincinnati Bengals; the score was 26-21. On January 2, 1985, they earned their shiny Super Bowl rings a second time, beating the Miami Dolphins 38-16. Joe Montana was once again voted M

The next three 49′er Super Bowl wins were in 1989 (wide receiver Jerry Rice, MVP), 1990 (Montana MVP) and 1995 (quarterback Steve Young MP) under Head Coach George Siefert.

NFL Power Rankings From Last Year
May 5th, 2011 by Michael Albridge

Last season in the NFL was a great season with a great finish. It was full of excitement and drama that no one could expect. This season will more than likely be just as exciting, but here is a look at the top teams from the NFL. These are the NFL power rankings for the top twenty teams from the 2010 season.

It should be no surprise the Green Bay Packers are the number one team in the NFL. They should be since they won the Super Bowl. They beat out the Pittsburgh Steelers in the title game. This is an easy one, they are number one and number two respectively.

After the top two spots there are the Jets. The Jets are led by outspoken coach Rex Ryan who has stated that his team will not only be in the Super Bowl next year, they will win it. The Falcons follow the Jets at number four, followed by the Ravens, Bears, Patriots and Saints. The Patriots are always a dangerous team when they have Tom Brady at quarterback.

The Bucs follow next. They have a young coach and a very young team. Watch them this year. The Chiefs, Colts, and Eagles follow right behind them. The Colts could have been a little higher if they did not have so many injuries. It just goes to show how injuries can plague the success of a team. The Giants, Chargers, Raiders, and Seahawks are next. This was a first. The Seahawks made the playoffs, and with a losing record.

The Rams, Dolphins, Jaguars, and Cowboys follow. You expect the Cowboys, with all their history, to be higher. But, with the season ending injury to star quarterback Tony Romo, the Cowboys ended less than average. They became the biggest disappointment of the NFL season with all that talent.

These are the power rankings from teams one to twenty from 2010. Some of these are sure fire bets to get into the playoffs next year, and some of these may drop even further down the list.
